Just like music, movies and books, comic books are available in digital format and there are various devices that can be used to view them. My personal portable media player of choice is the iPod Touch because I can take it everywhere, it holds a lot of stuff, and it fits in my pocket. When the new iOS 4.0 update came out, the application I used to read comics on my iPod Touch started acting weird and crashing. I contacted the developer and after a few emails I was told to contact Apple and request a refund. Sadly this is the attitude of some of the developers on the iTunes store. I searched the iTunes stores for a new comic read I didn’t really find any applications that worked as well as the one I had been using, but when I did some searching on the web one app did keep coming up. That app was Comic Reader Mobi. I wondered why Comic Reader Mobi was not on the iTunes store and found after a little research that it had been banned from the iTunes store for one year because it allowed users to sync comics over a USB connection. This function is now part of iTunes and other apps can do it, but Comic Reader Mobi is still banned until April 2011. I’m mentioning this because in order to use Comic Read Mobi you need to have your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad jailbroken. Jailbroken simply means that your device can run code that has not been signed by Apple.
The thing that really sets Comic Reader Mobi apart from other readers is the lens. Instead of zooming in on pages and reading the text all you do is simply click on a thought bubble or text box and the text gets enlarged enough for you to read it.
Comic Reader Mobi also has a several ways to sync comics with it such as iTunes and a desktop app called ComicSync. I like using the ComicSync app because it re-sizes the images making them load more efficiently. There is also a good community and great support available in the Comic Reader Mobi Forums.
